MySQL Workbench: Frequent Crashes in Mac OS X? This might be the fix

If you’re having frequent MySQL Workbench crashes in Mac OS X, check whether you don’t have some Subversion plugin installed, such as SCFinderPlugin or SCToolbarButton. Apparently they are outdated and do not work well in recent versions of OS X, causing certain other innocent applications to crash. Removing these plugins should fix the problem in affected apps, including Workbench.

See Bug #71119 or Bug #68080

To check whether this is your problem, look for a line similar to the following in the Mac OS X crashlogs generated for Workbench:

 0xbe29000 - 0xbe2dff7 +org.tigris.scfinderplugin (169) <BBADB6CA-61AE-24D5-4E0A-EBCCAD3F0D92> /Library/Contextual Menu Items/SCFinderPlugin.plugin/Contents/MacOS/SCFinderPlugin

To uninstall that plugin, delete the following files/folders with sudo:

/Library/Contextual Menu Items/SCFinderPlugin.plugin

The plugin seems to hook into some System framework (probably Finder or NSWorkspace related) and causes some Cocoa API calls to become messed up and any application that use these same APIs will become unstable.

  1. I was thrilled to see a post this morning addressing the frequent OS X crashes I experience multiple times a day in Workbench. Sadly, neither of these files exist on my system. 🙁

Workbench is a huge part of my daily work flow, so I will continue to use it and monitor performance on the new 6.1 Beta 1. The only thing I have not tried yet is completely uninstalling all traces of Workbench (including SQL history and stored connections, etc), as I recall previous 5.x bugs being specific to upgrading on top of an older version.

Any other advice or findings on preventing such crashes?

  2. Hi Mike,
Thanks for filing the report. The good news is that the crash logs provide a good enough idea of where and what’s the problem.
Hopefully we can get that fixed pretty soon, please keep checking!

  3. Has there been any progress on resolving the multiple crash issue? I have to “Force Quit” multiple times per day. Is this the same issue, or a different one? Thanks.

  4. The detected fault occurs frequently causing the crash is when “Select Rows – Limit 1000” in right click options.

    Version 6.1

  5. Version6.1.7 still crashes on my Mac.

Nothing happens when I click on menu items under Server, like Server Status. And it always immediately crashes when I select Management Access Settings…

  6. Wow…I’ve had this problem for so long and have kept switching versions to try to find one that worked. Some old versions seemed to work…sometimes. Finally a solution – and it worked! thanks!
